My special friend

Before I took part in the Expedition through the Arctic, I had lived by a schedule. In the Arctic you lose sense of time. Having 24 hours of sunlight we could start our hiking at what we thought was 3 PM but it was actually 3 AM.
Our entire being was focused on one thing: survival.
That day or night (I can’t say for sure) I was on polar bear watch while the others were sleeping.
I didn’t have to fall asleep so I looked outside for some fresh air and came face to face with a ...

…bear.
The bear looked very big and strong.
I thought it was very hungry and could eat everybody from my expedition.
I had to do something urgently. But I was so scared that I couldn’t move.
I was looking into its eyes and thinking what to do.
The bear’s eyes didn’t seem aggressive, they were sad.
And I got an idea. There was a basket with fish. So I took a fish and threw it to the bear.
The bear ate it and looked at me again. I threw one more fish.
I looked at its eyes after that and they seemed happier now. I decided to come closer.
I did it and even stroked the bear. It didn’t even try to bite me.
Then I went to the fire and the bear followed me. We were sitting together near the fire all the night.
I think the bear needed a friend more than food at that time.
When my friends saw us near the fire in the morning they were shocked.
In the end all of us became friends. We fed the bear every day.
Three weeks passed but the expedition was still very interesting and funny with our new friend.
