A Long Journey
Lilya Storchak . A Long Journey. LOW.
Snowy is a little polar bear cub. He lives in the northern Arctic with his family. Mummy bear, Daddy bear and Snowy can see ice and snow everywhere every day. They like swimming from ice floe to ice floe and digging holes in snow banks.
One day Snowy says, "I'm tired of this ice and snow. I'm going to live where I can see something quite different."
"But your home is here! Look! The snowflakes are dancing in the air! They are so beautiful! Listen to the snow! It's humming a very funny song, "scoosh-scoosh, scoosh-scoosh", his mother tells him.
"Nothing can stop me", answers Snowy. "I'm packing my things and ...
coming away on sunrise.
” His parents didn’t approve this decision, but they could do nothing.
At the dawning light Snowy left for his big trip.
He chose an ice floe for a ship, made a supply of fresh fish and began his big voyage.
He imagined himself the captain and was happy.
But the farther he sailed, the stronger became the wind and the waves.
The weather began to change. Snowy soon was out of food, and his floe became smaller and thinner.
When the ice broke, the bear cub was in water. Snowy got very much frightened.
He nearly gave out but luckily a schooner appeared. The sailors were surprised to find a polar bear near the coast of Iceland.
The exhausted bear cub was delivered to the Zoo, where the vets took care of him. Thanks to them the little bear recovered very soon.
He became a favorite of the Zoo visitors and children. But despite all the efforts, the bear cub felt very low. He didn’t play with other bears but lay alone most of the time. The specialists realized that Snowy could not live in captivity.
They organized an expedition to the Arctic. In the helicopter, they flew around for many miles in search of a single bear family.
At last, one she-bear started to sniff our hero. Snowy showed signs of strong excitement.
The scientists saw that the bear cub returned home.
